Remembering Trustee Emeritus Vernon E. Jordan, Jr., Esq.

Howard University is proud to celebrate the life and legacy of Trustee Emeritus Vernon E. Jordan, Jr., Esq. (Law 1960) and his contributions to Howard University and the nation.

Trustee Jordan was born in Atlanta on August 15, 1935.  After graduating high school Mr. Jordan went to college in Greencastle, Indiana before enrolling in the Howard University School of Law to pursue his Juris Doctorate.  Mr. Jordan was involved in numerous civil rights cases, including the case which desegregated the University of Georgia.

Mr. Jordan has served on the boards of American Express, Bankers Trust, Xerox, and many others.  In addition to his service on corporate boards, Trustee Jordan assisted President Bill Clinton on the campaign trail and was appointed to serve on his transition committee in 1992.  Professionally, Vernon Jordan most recently served as Partner Emeritus at Akin Gump. 

The Trustee Emeritus passed away on March 1, 2021, leaving a long-lasting legacy.  His involvement with, and support of, Howard University exemplifies Mr. Jordan's generosity and belief in Howard's mission.   Trustee Emeritus Vernon Jordan exemplifies Howard's motto of Excellence in Truth and Service

The Vernon E. Jordan, Jr., Esq. Endowed Chair provides support to the Executive Director of the Thurgood Marshall Civil Rights Center in recruitment, teaching, research, service, and other activities. The Thurgood Marshall Civil Rights Center is housed within the Howard University School of Law, and the Vernon E. Jordan, Jr., Esq. Endowed Chair has served as an intergral part of programmatic support for the center.  

The Jordan family and the University encourage donations to the Vernon E. Jordan, Jr., Esq. Endowed Chair to honor his legacy and commitment to Howard University.
