Allen Binford Carter '96 Memorial Scholarship Campaign

Allen Binford Carter, lovingly known as “Ben,” was born September 18, 1974, the first son of Dr. Allen Connard Carter and Dr. Juanita Robinson Carter.  Despite early beginnings on the West Coast, Ben grew up primarily in Stone Mountain and Atlanta, Georgia.  However, when it was time to attend college, Ben reached back past the familiarity of the Atlanta University Center, where his parents both obtained degrees, and followed his own path to Washington, D.C., adding to the long line of Bison in his extended family (his great grandfather, Henry Claxton Binford, being the first to attend Howard in the class of 1873).  Ben’s undergraduate experience at Howard University - where he graduated Cum Laude in 1996 as a Walter P. Annenberg Honors Scholar with a double major in Telecommunication Management and Spanish - was a bridge from his early academic success to the distinctive educational, business and entrepreneurial ventures that came later. It was also on HU’s campus that he was initiated as an Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Beta Chapter member in the Spring of 1995.  Without question, Ben’s life reflected the lyrics of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. hymn: “Manly deeds, scholarship, and love for all mankind,” as well as the motto of his alma mater - Veritas et Utilitas (Truth & Service).

On campus, in addition to his beloved fraternity, Ben was also a member of Phi Sigma Pi, the School of Communications Student Council, the Frederick Douglass Honor Society, a Who’s Who of America honoree and a trailblazer with the WHBC on-campus radio station.  He eventually returned to Atlanta, where he and his friendly smile were a fixture in the local alumni community, providing endless support and dedication to the Howard University Alumni Club of Atlanta.  As the partial owner and Vice President of Talero Tequila brand, Ben was known for frequently sponsoring and participating in community events, consistently and enthusiastically “showing up,” and supporting and encouraging his loved ones in their passions.  This included being a staunch advocate and unofficial recruiter for Howard University, inspiring his younger brother, Tony, and others, to undertake their own journey to “the Mecca.”  Ben Carter will be remembered for his legacy of excellence, along with his unwavering dedication, pioneering spirit, and profound impact on the city of Atlanta, the Howard University community, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and his many family and friends.

Your donations for a scholarship in Binford Carter’s name will honor this proud and active Howard alumnus, who was constantly encouraging young people to aspire to an HU education.  Our goal of raising $4,444 will fund a Named Scholarship Award from the Howard University Alumni Club of Atlanta Scholarship Fund for a local student attending Howard University in the 2024-2025 school year, and is inspired by Ben’s fraternity line number "4.”  Additional funds raised will go toward funding the 2025/2026 Named Scholarship Award in Ben’s memory. May his legacy continue to inspire others to be bold, be kind, and to bring LIFE to the party!
