Howard Institute for Advanced Study
The Howard Institute for Advanced Study is dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of racism in the global African Diaspora built on the highest standards of intellectual inquiry. The Institute will engage thinkers from around Howard University, the United States, and the world to address the deep and persisting racial inequities and injustices in areas including but not limited to healthcare, the economy, the environment, political formations, technology, education, and the criminal legal system.
The Institute will revolve around a competitive Residential Fellowship Program where an annual international class of fellows will pursue impactful projects across disciplines and fields. The Institute plans to pair each fellow with a Howard student to foster research and mentorship, and open the fellowship program to Howard faculty. The Institute will be the new home of The Emancipator, a digital platform that explores and explains solutions to racial inequity and injustice, especially in emerging issues like climate change and AI across the global African Diaspora. It will be part of the Institute’s larger mission to enhance the general public’s understanding of racism and evidence-based antiracist solutions through academic and publicly accessible research, public lectures, events, workshops, and outreach programs.
